Team racing is alive and well at Ida Lewis. We have
at least 10 events planned this year with a little something
for everyone.
Team
Racing Seminar:Activities start on April 24th
when Roy Williams will give a team racing seminar at the
Seaman's Church Institute. Roy is the Sailing
Coach at St. Georges School, and has generously offered to
refresh the basics and then add some advanced techniques. All
are invited. It's at 7:00 PM upstairs. Please
RSVP either to me or the club so we can ensure sufficient
seating.
Sunday
Afternoon Team Racing: Over the
past few years we have organized Sunday afternoon team racing
at Sail Newport. We typically meet at the club at 3:30,
travel by launch to Sail Newport, and race in J-22s from
4 until 7. Often there is pizza after. It's great fun
and it doesn't matter what skill level you are. This
year we will continue the tradition with at least 4 events
planned. Stay tuned for the exact dates. There
will also be a few new twists. We have 5 interclub
events scheduled this season:
Kinsale,
Ireland:Ida Lewis has
been invited back to Kinsale, Ireland over the weekend of
May 10-11 to defend last summer's win in Newport. Skippers
Charlie Shoemaker, John Burnham, and Jeff Johnstone will
lead our team on the water in J-80s.
Seawanhaka: We
have also been invited back to Seawanhaka YC to race in the
Second Annual Oyster Bay Challenge on May 31st and June 1st. The
event is sailed in Sonars. Last year we started strong,
but ended up third in a very close race. This year we
will finish strong!
Lake
Winnipesaukee:On June 28 and 29 we sail on
Lake Winnipesaukee in J-80 as guests of the Lake Winnipesaukee
YC. Later in the season we plan to race at Beverly
YC in Marion, also in J-80s. The exact date is not
yet firm, but we hope to race in mid July.
George
Hinam Masters Team Race: Ida
Lewis has been invited to race in the George Hinman Masters
Team Race at NYYC August 14-16. Past Commodore Adams
is our Team Captain for this exciting and prestigious event.
Hoyt
Invitational:Finally,
we are planning the Hoyt Invitational for Sept 26, 27, 28th
here in Newport.
